The WMSOA Advantage
Root cause obsessed
What are the advantages of Naturopathic and Functional Medicine over traditional medicine? First and foremost, Naturopathic/Functional Medicine takes the approach of figuring out why you are sick instead of just treating your symptoms using one-size-fits-all therapies. It utilizes science-based laboratory testing and other non-traditional types of testing to pinpoint hormonal and nutritional imbalances. Once these imbalances are indentified, we can then prescribe a highly personalized and customized treatment plan based on each person’s biochemistry and particular situation.
Unsurpassed training & experience
There are many doctors in metro Atlanta to choose from and many practices that offer Naturopathic and/or holistic medicine, so why should you choose WMSOA?
Our Founder, Dr. Bongiovanni, is recognized as a leader in the important field of defining personal nutrient needs. He developed his expertise in clinical laboratory medicine serving as a clinical specialist to a premiere specialty laboratory in Georgia, focusing on nutritional and hormonal testing. As such, he has been instrumental in developing tests and interpretive guidelines for innovative nutritional and hormonal laboratory profiles. In fact, he teaches fellow clinicians on the use of laboratory testing to define nutrient needs as well as to evaluate disease risk for the individual patient.
Dr. Bongiovanni separates himself from other traditional and alternative medicine physicians by offering a fresh approach to medicine that is both science-based and patient-first. By combining excellent patient care, innovative laboratory assessments and cutting-edge natural medicines, he is able to provide a unique service that is highly tailored to each patient and their individual biochemistry.
Dr. Bongiovanni also trained in Integrative Medicine with Eric Braverman, MD, director of PATH Medical in Manhattan and the author of the best-seller, “The Edge Effect”. Working side by side with medical doctors, Dr. Bongiovanni gained valuable experience about how to work well with other medical professionals for the best interests of the patient. He now integrates his cumulative education, training and experience for the benefit of all his patients here in Atlanta.
Education & expertise
In a state like Georgia, there are both trained and ‘non-trained’ Naturopathic doctors (NDs). Trained NDs go through 4 years of undergraduate training (college), then another 4 years of graduate level medical school training, then another 1-2 years of medical residency training. We dissect cadavers, study pathology, biochemistry, and other basic medical sciences in addition to the clinical sciences of cardiology, psychiatry, and gastroenterology etc. We spend 2 years seeing patients in medical school under supervision, which culminates in the qualification for us to take board certification exams and become licensed. Upon licensure, we are eligible for an additional 1-2 years of residency training.
‘Non-trained’ NDs are those that study online courses or receive a diploma via a mail order course.
Anyone can attain knowledge, but only trained NDs offer knowledge AND experience. Which naturopathic doctor would you rather have on your side?
The ONLY accredited four-year Naturopathic medical school programs in North America are as follows:
- National College of Naturopathic Medicine
- Bastyr University
- Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine
- Bridgeport University
- Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine
- Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine
- National University of Health Sciences

Dr. Bongiovanni provides what every patient seeks…RESULTS. That is his real specialty.
Many practitioners, such as Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Nutritionists and other Holistic Practitioners, are getting into the wellness field. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean they are all properly trained and qualified. Dr. Bongiovanni believes in ALL of these disciplines, but that they each have their time and place in the restoration of your health. Acupuncturists are good at acupuncture, not necessarily nutrition. Chiropractors are good at spinal manipulation, not necessary herbal medicine or prescribing supplements. Nutritionists are good at helping people plan their meals in accordance with their goals, not necessarily diagnosing and treating disease, or using homeopathic medicines.
If you are looking for a captain of your team, a quarterback per se…someone that will see the whole field, understand all the moving parts, direct the necessary actions and is properly prepared to understand what is happening and why, and what needs to be done to achieve the end goal…then you are looking for a properly trained and credentialed Naturopathic doctor.
We believe in a system of healthcare that is truly INTEGRATIVE. No one holds a monopoly on how to get people well again. We are always open to working with your existing healthcare team (including your MD) to team up and synergize on your behalf. And when appropriate, Dr. Bongiovanni routinely refers out to MDs, such as urologists, gynecologists, psychiatrists, endocrinologists and gastroenterologists.
We have structured our practice to be able to spend 60 full minutes with each new patient so we can fully comprehend what may be underlying each patient’s health problems, and then 30 minutes with each patient every time they return. We run an on-time practice, which means you don’t sit for hours in a waiting room or in a gown in the treatment room. Your appointments start and end ON TIME.
Dr. Bongiovanni thoroughly questions and reviews each patient’s case, labwork, diet, family history, disease risk factors, current medications and supplements in his quest to understand why each patient may be unwell and how best to reverse that.
